Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department launches Maharashtra Methane Mission (M3) in collaboration with eVerse.AI

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 27: The Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department has embarked on an ambitious journey towards sustainable livestock management with the launch of the Maharashtra Methane Mission (M3). This groundbreaking initiative aims to tackle methane emissions head-on, making it the largest methane reduction program in the world. In a strategic move, Maharashtra Livestock Development Board (MLDB) has signed an MOU with eVerse.AI, a leading technology and services company specializing in livestock and climate solutions, to drive this mission forward.

Commenting on the MOU, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary – Revenue and Animal Husbandry, Government of Maharashtra remarked, ” Maharashtra is committed to becoming a leader in climate action, and the Methane Mission is a key part of our strategy. By working together with stakeholders across the state, we aim to reduce methane emissions, promote sustainable agriculture and waste management practices, and create a cleaner, greener Maharashtra for future generations.”

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the global livestock emissions amount to 7.1 GT of CO2e per year representing 14.5% of all GHG emissions. Livestock and dairy farming, while essential for food production, contributes substantially to methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that accelerates climate change. Over a 20-year time span, methane is 80 times more potent than C02. Primarily emitted through enteric fermentation and manure management, methane has a global warming potential much higher than that of carbon dioxide. The long-term impacts of methane emissions on the environment are dire, making it imperative to address this issue promptly.

As Maharashtra embarks on this groundbreaking endeavor, the Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come. By harnessing the collective efforts of stakeholders, leveraging innovative technologies, and prioritizing environmental stewardship, the Maharashtra Methane Mission (M3) sets a bold precedent for global climate action and paves the way towards a more resilient and sustainable livestock and dairy sector.

Dr. Pravin Deore, Commissioner, Animal Husbandry department expressed his enthusiasm about this transformative collaboration: “The Maharashtra Methane Mission (M3) is a testament to our commitment to sustainable livestock agriculture. By harnessing the latest technologies and scientific expertise, we aim to create a greener, healthier future for our livestock and the planet. The Maharashtra Methane Mission (M3) is not just a program; it’s a promise to future generations”.

By adopting interventions such as the Ration Balancing Program (RBP) and feed additives, farmers will experience enhanced livestock health, improved digestion efficiency, and a marked increase in milk production. This translates to higher incomes for dairy farmers through increased yields and better-quality milk. Additionally, the revenue generated from carbon credits will be reinvested to provide direct monetary benefits to farmers, further boosting their income and incentivizing their active participation in climate-friendly practices.

Dr. Sathish Raju, CEO of Maharashtra Livestock Development Board (MLDB) expressed his enthusiasm about this transformative collaboration: “The Maharashtra Methane Program is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reducing methane emissions from the state’s 20 million strong cattle population. Through the strategic use of feed additives as an intervention, the program aims to achieve a 30% reduction in methane emissions from manure and enteric fermentation. To support this effort, we are collaborating with a reputed university in the US to leverage the methane measurement device and latest research and expertise. Additionally, we are utilizing eVerse.AI’s cutting-edge sustainability Platform, Greencow.earth, to track and monitor the progress of the program. The project has been registered with a carbon registry entity, enabling the generation of carbon credits. This innovative approach not only helps mitigate climate change but also provides an opportunity for farmers to earn additional income through the sale of carbon credits, promoting sustainable agriculture practices and improving livelihoods.”

eVerse.AI CEO, Ashish Sonkusare, shared his vision for the initiative: “We are proud to be part of the M3 program. Our mission is to drive positive impact on a massive scale through technology and science backed practices. Together with Maharashtra department of Animal Husbandry, we will lead the way in methane reduction across the globe.”
